Preliminary round of Fencing Grand Prix begin |
DOHA,
January 22, 2010 – The 2010 Qatar Grand Prix – Epee for men and
women commenced Friday with men’s individual preliminary rounds here
at the Aspire.
The day was well dominated by Russia, as five of the six Russian
fencers cruised their way to qualify for the table of 64 which
begins on Saturday.
Ninth-seed Sergey Khodos of Russia led his contingent by a narrow
15-14 win over Venezuelan Francisco Limardo. Khodos meets Englishman
Jonathan Willis in Tab64.
Other Russians who qualified were, Igor Tourchine, Pavel Sukhov,
Alexander Velikanov and Anton Glebko.
Three fencers each from Poland and Ukraine also qualified for
Saturday’s round of 64.
Two each from China, Switzerland, Korea, Germany, France, Israel and
Kazakhstan are also lined-up for the crucial direct elimination
contest.
Defending champion, Alfredo Rota of Italy will begin his campaign
against qualifier Bogdan Nikishin of Ukraine in Saturday’s main
round.
Host Qatar’s promising fencers displayed a satisfactory performance
against world’s best epeeists.
