South Koreans sustain
top spot in Asian Fencing Championship
DOHA,
November 17, 2009:
South Korean men included one more gold to their tally on Tuesday
when they won epee team title at the 2009 Asian Fencing Championship
taking place at the Aspire Academy.
South Korea toppled the standings with 4 gold, 3 silver and 7
bronze, China is second with 3 gold, 3 silver and 4 bronze, ahead of
Japan with 1 gold and 3 bronze.
The other team in the standing is Kazakhstan which won silver in
men’s epee team.
The South Koreans defeated Kazakhstan 45/44 in a closely fought epee
final.
Kazakhstan’s fencers gave nothing away against their South Korean
rivals as the contest had some thrilling moments. In the end, it was
South Korea that prevailed with the verdict.
“It was a real close contest,” said South Korea’s coach Jae Sung
Shim.
“Towards
the finishing stages of the final, I was tensed. It could have gone
either way. I am happy and relieved that we won,” added Shim.
In the last and final round, it was Jung Seung Hua who clinched
victory for South Koreans and he came in for praise from the coach.
“Jung Seung Hua was very good in the final round. We owe the victory
to him. Kazakhstan fencers knew our strategies and they came hard at
us. They were good,” said Shim.
In the women’s Sabre team event, China denied South Korea another
gold as the romped to 45-26 victory.
“The level of the competition was very high. South Korea is a good
team. However, we had a better technique,” said China’s French coach
Christian Bauer.
