QFF set eyes on 2013
World Fencing Championships

The Qatar Fencing
Federation, is planning to bring World Fencing Championships in
2013, according to QFF’s President, H.E. Sheikh Saoud Bin
Abdulrahman Al Thani.
Sheikh Saoud, who is also the Secretary-General of Qatar Olympic
Committee watched the final of the ongoing Asian Fencing
Championship at the Aspire Academy, said that the Federation is
planning to bring the World Championships to Doha.
“We are planning to bring the World Championships to Doha in 2013.
“Qatar has the resources and facilities to host any event as we have
the infrastructure in place. As a QOC objective - we want to use
sports as a tool to promote Qatar globally as a sports tourist
destination,” Sheikh Saoud said.
The World Championships in Fencing is an annual competition
organised by the International Fencing Federation (FIE). The world
championships are, after the Olympic Games, the most prominent
international competition in the sport of fencing. Contestants may
participate in Foil, Epee and Sabre events.
This year’s Championships was held in Turkey and the next edition
will be hosted by France in Paris.
Speaking
about the ongoing Asian Fencing Championship, Sheikh Saoud said
Qatar is very proud to host the event.
“We are very proud to host this Championship. Qatar is the first
country in the Middle East to organise this Asian event. The
competition is of the highest quality with participation of more
than 300 fencers from 23 countries,” Sheikh Saoud said.
He added that events like these help Qatari youngsters to take up
the sport and improve while competing against some of the world’s
best.
Organising sports events in Qatar is also helping the oil-rich
country to boost tourism and enhance the economy.
“Events at this level, is also boosting tourism, giving good
business to hotel and travel industries in Qatar,” Sheikh Saoud
said.
