Fiedler grabs men’s individual gold in Qatar Grand Prix

DOHA, January 23, 2009: Joerg Fiedler of Germany grabbed men’s individual gold Saturday at the 2010 Qatar Fencing Grand Prix – Epee for men and women.

The 31-year-old German overpowered Alexey Tikhomirov 15-11 in the epic final here at the Aspire.

“It was a tough day, in all the matches I played today, I used my skills and talent to overcome strong opponents,” said Fiedler.

2004 Athens Olympic Games epee team bronze medallist, Fiedler was in top form to lift his first title of the year.

“We prepared well for the competition and with the support of our national coach (Didier Ollagnon) I managed to take the gold in Qatar,” admitted Fiedler after the final.

The bronze medals were awarded to Sergey Khodos of Russia and Paolo Pizzo of Italy.

The fencers were felicitated by HE Sheikh Saoud Bin Abdulrahman Al Thani, Secretary General of Qatar Olympic Committee and President of Qatar Fencing Federation, Mr. Khaleel Al Jaber, Director of Sports Affairs at QOC and Mr. Pierre Thullberg, Member of European Fencing Confederation and Chairman of Competition Commission.

Sheikh Saoud hailed the high technical level displayed by fencers in the event, which was one of the strongest fencing campaigns at the world level.

His Excellency also stressed that all participating delegates came to Doha on their own expenses a matter that confirms the successive policy of QFF to secure a proper sport marketing for the country, where an elite - top world champions came to Doha to attend the prestigious event.

Later, after the felicitation ceremony, the organising committee had organised a dinner banquet at the Grand Regency hotel for the participating delegates, fencers and other officials.

Earlier on Saturday morning, women's individual preliminary round also began, the finals of which will be held on Sunday.
