France take men’s team gold, Shemyakina shines in women’s individual

DOHA, January 24, 2009: The Frenchman proved their dominance at the Fencing arena when they outclassed Hungary in the men’s team finals Sunday, at the 2010 Qatar Fencing Grand Prix – Epee for men and women taking place at the Aspire.

Top-seeded French overpowered second-seed Hungarians 45-33 in the epic final. Poland finished third for bronze.

HE Sheikh Saoud Bin Abdulrahman Al Thani, Secretary-General of Qatar Olympic Committee and President of Qatar Fencing Federation awarded medals to the winners,

The felicitation ceremony was also attended by French Ambassador to Qatar, HE Gilles Bonnaud.

Colonel Didier Duval, Defense Attache at the France Embassy gave silver medals to the Hungarian team.

Iranian Alireza Poursalman, the secretary general of Asian Fencing Confederation crowned the bronze medallists Poland team.

In women’s individuals final, Ukrainian Yana Shemyakina trounced Emese Szasz 15-8 of Hungary to claim gold.

Tatiana Logounova of Russia and Bianc Del Carretto of Italy took bronze medals respectively.

Mr. Saleh Amer Al Hemaidi, QFF Secretary General said that the splendid success achieved in the championship reflects Doha’s huge organisational abilities to host all international sport event.

“The intensive efforts exerted by all working committees is key of success,” said Al Hemaidi.

Mr. Abdullah Jawhar Ali, head of championship medical committee, said that the committee member took samples from all participating fencers and sent them to UK for check-up according to the regulations of International Fencing Federation (FIE).
