Polish women triumph
team gold in Qatar Grand Prix
DOHA,
January 25, 2009: The Polish women ruled team event at the
2010 Qatar Fencing Grand Prix – Epee beating Russia on the
penultimate day at the Aspire on Monday.
Poland overcame strong Russian resilience with a flourishing 45-37
win.
In the third-place playoff, the Chinese women held nerves to
register a narrow 45-43 victory over arch-rivals Korea to claim
bronze.
HE Sheikh Saoud Bin Abdulrahman Al Thani, Secretary-General of Qatar
Olympic Committee and President of the Qatar Fencing Federation
crowned the champions.
Mr. Saleh Amer Al Hemaidi, QFF Secretary-General handed silver
medals. The coronation ceremony was attended by International
Fencing Federation, FIE and other QFF officials.
In the overall standings, Poland finished with one gold and a bronze
in women’s team and men’s team respectively, Ukraine with one gold
in women’s individual, France took men’s team gold, while Germany
grabbed men’s individual gold.
The Russians took two silver and two bronze respectively. Hungary
two silver, Italy two bronze and China one bronze in the overall
medals tally.
