It's a tough task for our fencers in the
Asian Games: President
DOHA,
November 01:
His Excellency Sheikh Saoud Bin
Abdulrahman Al Thani, President of Qatar Fencing Federation (QFF),
Secretary General of Qatar National Olympic Committee (QNOC) has no
high hopes from the inexperienced Qatari fencers representing at the
15th Asian Games Doha 2006 starting in December.
"No chance (he laughs), I guess our
fencers will have a tough chance to even make it to the top three in
the forthcoming Asian Games, as they will be battling against top
fencers from China, Kazakhstan, Korea, Kuwait and Japan who have
better chances to finish at the top spot," HE said addressing
mediapersons during the press briefing at QNOC.
"The five-year-old QFF is still
inexperienced we are working hard to train our fencers and provide
the best facilities to make them demonstrate high-quality
performance at International level," he added.
The Asian fencers had a respectable
performance during the 2006 World Juniors and Cadets Fencing
Championships held in Taebaek City. A total of two golds, 5 silvers
and 5 bronze medals were won by Asian fencers coming from Korea,
Kazakhstan, China and Japan.
Meanwhile, the Chinese fencing team
made a “world-class” performance during the recently concluded World
Fencing Championships held in Turin Italy from September 28 to
October 3, 2006 by winning 2 golds and one bronze medal, thus
demonstrating their preparedness for the upcoming Asian Games in
Doha and Beijing Olympic Games in 2008.
The other Asian
country which got the limelight was Korea which won three bronze
medals. |
